The Fall of Kings

March them down with their coffers of gold,
Like kings without kingdoms, their crowns are growing cold.
They bought every whisper, they silenced each plea,
But time takes its tithe, and none march for free.

Their pretty suits of plate, gleaming and bright,
Nary a tarnish, a trick of the light.
Yet rust creeps beneath, fed by time and by fear.

Their banners hang heavy, and their trumpets sound thin.

For coffers buy armies, but not what’s within.
Their breath warms upon my skin as I stand.

A whisper, a kiss, the turn of my hand—
"Your kingdom falls to the iron fist of a woman."

Their spines stiffened, silver tongues turned to lead,
Eyes wide with the weight of the words I have said.

For gold may build empires, and steel may command,
But power bends easiest to a woman's hand.
