She laughed hard at her own joke, leaning back on the bench too far, and suddenly the world tilted. Her arms flailed as gravity betrayed her, but just before she hit the ground, strong hands caught her, steadying her with a grip that felt like it belonged.
She looked up, breathless, into amused eyes crinkled with mischief and something softer. “Gotcha,” he said, his voice low and warm, and for a moment, the embarrassment melted into something electric.
She wasn’t sure if her heart was racing from the near fall or how his fingers lingered on hers as he helped her back up, but she was gone either way.
